The Creosote plant (Larrea tridentata) is a hardy, evergreen shrub native to the arid deserts of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It is especially common in the Mojave, Sonoran, and Chihuahuan Deserts. Known for its small, waxy green leaves and yellow flowers that bloom in spring, the plant is extremely drought-tolerant and thrives in hot, dry environments. One of its most notable features is the strong, distinctive smell it emits after rain—a scent often described as earthy or tar-like, which gives the plant its common name. This aroma is caused by volatile oils in the leaves that are released when wet.

Creosote is also remarkable for its longevity and resilience. Its deep root system helps it survive in extremely dry soil, and it often grows in open areas with little competition. Today, Creosote continues to be an iconic and ecologically important species in desert ecosystems, providing shelter and stability in some of the harshest climates.
